• Tlaquepaque, Sedona's arts and crafts village

"Tlaquepaque, meaning the "best of everything," has been a Sedona landmark since the 1970's. Its vine covered stucco walls, cobble-stoned walkways and magnificent arched entryways give you the feeling that Tlaquepaque has been here for centuries. Tasteful galleries and unique shops live in harmony with its lush natural environment where giant sycamore trees stand in testimony to the care taken in preserving the timeless beauty of the Tlaquepaque grounds." http://www.tlaq.com/
We met lots of friendly people on our trip to the Southwest, and many were kind enough to pose for a picture with barely any coaxing(!). This lad worked for one of the jeep tours out of Sedona and was more than willing to pose for a few shots.
• Red Rock State Park, Sedona, AZ

We spent an afternoon at this beautiful state park, exploring trails and forests, and enjoying some terrific vistas. I don't know the story of this structure but it seemed to capture the very essence of the southwest. It looks like a mill of some sort, although it's not near any water. More info on Red Rock State Park can be found here: http://www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/red-rock/state-park.html

Sedona is known for it's red soil, buttes and mountains. They provide magnificent vistas in all directions. Additional images of the red rocks of Sedona can be seen in this gallery: http://www.edspadoni.com/Photography/The-Great-American-Southwest/15384211_vL5AB#1158440689_HXHsY
With winter less than a month old, we've had two major snowstorms here in New England. Yesterday's was the result of the storm that swept through (and shut down most of) the south, which converged with another storm that moved eastward from the midwest. They met and graced us with 12 - 20" of snow, high winds and frigid temperatures. But as Mark Twain said:“If you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.”

We're waiting.
 • The Hoover Dam and Bypass Bridge

Construction of the Colorado River Bridge is now complete! The Colorado River Bridge is the central portion of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project. Construction on the nearly 2,000 foot long bridge (with a 1,060 foot twin-rib concrete arch) began in late January 2005 and traffic began using the Hoover Dam Bypass on October 19, 2010. This signature bridge spans the Black Canyon (about 1,500 feet south of the Hoover Dam), connecting the Arizona and Nevada Approach highways nearly 900-feet above the Colorado River. http://www.hooverdambypass.org/

Another in the Kingman rodeo series, I was amazed at the power of the bull and the stamina of the rider. The rider just before this one took a bad fall and needed medical assistance. But this cowboy hung on and gave that bull a heckuva ride.

 • Andy Devine Days Rodeo at Mohave County Fairgrounds, Kingman, AZ

After visiting Hoover Dam, we headed south to Kingman AZ where the 26th Annual Andy Devine Days Rodeo was underway. For a couple of eastern city-slickers, it was a grand old time. The theme this year was breast cancer awareness and there were many women competing, such as in this barrel racing event.

You may need to be "of a certain age" to remember Andy Devine, who was raised in Kingman. He was a well-known character actor who portrayed many a cowboy in western movies and TV shows. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0222596/

Thank you for all the feedback on the portait of Harry yesterday. Many of you asked where I was on "self-portrait day"... Well here you go. My lovely wife took this at the brink of Little Colorado River Canyon, south of the Grand Canyon. I wore that vest almost everyday of our trip, despite my wife's pleadings to where something else, anything else.
