The Great American Southwest

In the fall of 2010, we spent two weeks exploring the Great American Southwest. It was an amazing trip, amidst spectacular scenery, history and people. I took over 1700 images during that time, and over time, will be sharing many of them here. Please feel free to visit this gallery and leave comments. I hope you enjoy these scenes as much we enjoyed visiting them.

Please note the dates listed with many of these pictures is the date I posted them as a Daily Photo, not the date they were shot.
Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression, and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Wikipedia

Construction of the Colorado River Bridge is now complete! The Colorado River Bridge is the central portion of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project. Construction on the nearly 2,000 foot long bridge (with a 1,060 foot twin-rib concrete arch) began in late January 2005 and traffic began using the Hoover Dam Bypass on October 19, 2010. This signature bridge spans the Black Canyon (about 1,500 feet south of the Hoover Dam), connecting the Arizona and Nevada Approach highways nearly 900-feet above the Colorado River. http://www.hooverdambypass.org/
After visiting Hoover Dam, we headed south to Kingman AZ where the 26th Annual Andy Devine Days Rodeo was underway. For a couple of eastern city-slickers, it was a grand old time. The theme this year was breast cancer awareness and there were many women competing, such as in this barrel racing event.

You may need to be "of a certain age" to remember Andy Devine, who was raised in Kingman. He was a well-known character actor who portrayed many a cowboy in western movies and TV shows. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0222596/

Another in the Kingman rodeo series, I was amazed at the power of the bull and the stamina of the rider. The rider just before this one took a bad fall and needed medical assistance. But this cowboy hung on and gave that bull a heckuva ride.

Sedona is known for it's red soil, buttes and mountains. They provide magnificent vistas in all directions. We spent an afternoon at this beautiful state park, exploring trails and forests, and enjoying some terrific vistas. I don't know the story of this structure but it seemed to capture the very essence of the southwest. It looks like a mill of some sort, although it's not near any water. Excellent colors and textures. What a breathtaking view!
I stood in a spot very similar to where you stood to take this 15 years or so ago. A print 16X20 is in my home office along with a sister mountain. The negative, well, somewhere.
